What Clients Are Saying

I have decided to solely use AJ’s for my jewelry upkeep and repair, and will go to them first for new jewelry purchases as well. Service elsewhere is always disappointing. I find AJ’s team is straightforward, transparent, and working with the customer and customer experience in mind.

If you’re interested in sourcing a stone that’s not on the list, get in touch with our team to see how we can help. Our extensive network enables us to source niche gemstones not typically held on the showfloor. Whether you are looking for a specific type, cut, or size, our team is dedicated to meeting your needs with personalized service.

Replacing a gemstone depends on a few different factors, namely the amount of time that it takes to source the replacement stone.

While we do carry a selection of loose gemstones in our showroom, if your desired stone is not in stock and we need to source it, lead times can vary from a week or longer. In these cases, it’s best to get in touch with our team to give you a more accurate lead time.

Nonetheless, when we do have the gemstone on hand, the actual setting process will take a few days or less.

Absolutely. As custom jewelry designers, we are intimately familiar with all different kinds of settings and prong types. With this in mind, we can help you set any gemstone you have on your desired piece, whether you already have the replacement gem on hand, or if you need us to help you source it.

When replacing a gemstone on one of your jewelry pieces, it’s important to keep in mind both the visual and physical characteristics of the replacement stone. This is to ensure that you select a stone that not only complements your piece aesthetically, but also suits its intended use.

Visual Characteristics: Each one of your treasured jewelry pieces has a unique, distinct character that you’ve come to know and love. When it comes to replacing the most important part of your jewelry - the gemstone - it's important to know how the replacement stone will fit in visually with the piece as a whole.

This holds especially true if you're updating up an old piece by replacing its existing gemstone with one of a different type.

Some important consideration, in this case, would be how the new gemstone fits in with the hue of the metal, how it fits in with any existing supporting or main stones, or how it fits in with any existing pieces that you typically wear.

If you’re planning on rejuvenating the look of an old piece by replacing one of its stones with one of the same type, it’s still important to do your homework so that you choose one that matches it visually.

Different gemstones of the same type can look different, so it’s important to make an informed choice so that you successfully restore the look of your old piece, rather than change it altogether.

Physical Characteristics: Different gemstones have different characteristics that make them more or less suitable for different types of wear. Like with visual characteristics, when choosing a replacement gemstone it’s important that we pay attention to its physical characteristics so we can match it appropriately with the piece in question.

If we’re replacing the gemstone on a piece that will receive daily wear and contact, it’s best to choose a stone that’s durable and can handle daily life, for example, a diamond.

At the same token, if we’re replacing the stone on a piece that receives less wear, or is on a part of the body that doesn’t get much contact - like earrings - the number of suitable options open up to gemstones that may be more delicate, like opals or pearls.

In addition to durability, an example of another physical factor to consider would be the gemstone’s resistance to fading. Some stones, like amethyst and emerald, will fade with long term light exposure. Stones like these would be best suited for pieces that are worn on special occasions or indoors.

In any case, choosing the right gemstone for your jewelry requires expertise and a keen eye for detail. At AJ's Jewelry, we are proud to have an on-site GIA graduate Diamond Grader who brings years of experience to help in the gemstone selection process. We invite you to our showroom in Queens, New York, where you can enjoy a complimentary consultation. Let us assist you in finding the perfect stone to enhance your cherished piece.
