Inspired by One, Built for Another: The Lab Grown Emerald 3-Stone Ring with Matching Band

When Our Work Inspires the Next Dream

Some of the most meaningful projects we take on at AJ's Jewelry begin not with a blank page, but with a piece we have already made. When this client came in, they arrived with a specific reference point — our 14 Karat Lab Grown Oval Emerald Engagement Ring, a custom piece we had crafted featuring a vibrant lab grown oval emerald as its centerpiece in 14 karat yellow gold. That ring had clearly made an impression. But rather than replicate it, the client wanted to take the spirit of what they saw — the warmth of yellow gold, the boldness of a lab grown emerald as a center stone — and build something entirely their own around it, with stones they had personally chosen and a design that was uniquely theirs.

The Stones: Chosen With Intention

What set this project apart from the very beginning was that the client came in with the stones already decided. Three of them, each selected with a clear sense of how they would work together.

At the center: an elongated cushion lab grown emerald. The elongated cushion is a shape that bridges the gap between the classic cushion's soft, rounded corners and the rectangular length of a more linear cut — the result is a stone that feels both vintage and modern, with a surface area that allows the emerald's deep, saturated green to fully express itself. It is a distinctive choice for a center stone, and a striking one.

Flanking it on either side: two lab grown diamonds in a trapezoid shape. The trapezoid — with its angled sides that taper toward the band — is one of the most architecturally considered side stone shapes in jewelry design. Rather than simply framing the center stone, trapezoid side stones actively direct the eye inward, drawing attention toward the emerald while adding their own brilliant, geometric presence. The combination of a lush green emerald center and two white diamond trapezoids creates a trio that feels considered, curated, and completely intentional.

Designing the Full Set — Ring and Band Together

Once the stones and general direction were confirmed, we sat down together in store and got to work on the design — and from the very start, this was always going to be more than just a ring. The client wanted a matching wedding band designed alongside the engagement ring, so that both pieces could be conceived and visualized as a complete set from day one rather than treated as two separate projects.

This approach changes everything about how a design comes together. The profile of the engagement ring, the height of the setting, the way the center stone and trapezoid side stones meet the band — all of these decisions were made with the wedding band already in the picture, ensuring that the two pieces would nest together seamlessly when worn side by side.

Seeing It All in a Digital Rendering First

Before a single piece of metal was cast, we produced a full digital rendering of the complete set — the 3-stone engagement ring and the matching wedding band together — for the client's review and approval.

Seeing both pieces rendered digitally, side by side as they would appear worn, was essential to the success of this project. It allowed the client to evaluate not just how the engagement ring looked on its own, but how the two rings related to each other in proportion, profile, and overall visual weight. The elongated cushion emerald, the trapezoid diamonds, the matching band — all of it visible and adjustable before production began.

The client reviewed the rendering in detail, confirmed that every element was exactly as envisioned, and gave the approval to move forward. No guessing. No surprises. Just complete confidence in what was about to be made.

Every Detail, Decided Together

With the design approved, we worked through every remaining specification of both pieces side by side — ensuring that nothing was left to assumption and that every choice was made with full understanding of its impact on the finished set.

The client chose 14 Karat Yellow Gold for the setting, and it was the ideal foundation for this combination of stones. Yellow gold and green emerald have a relationship that goes back centuries — the warmth of the gold deepens the richness of the emerald's color, the two hues complementing each other in a way that feels natural rather than designed. Against the yellow gold, the trapezoid lab grown diamonds read with brilliant contrast, their cool white light playing beautifully off the warm metal and the green center stone.

At 14 karats, the yellow gold delivers the durability the setting demands — secure enough to protect three carefully chosen stones for a lifetime of daily wear, and warm enough in color to serve as the perfect backdrop for everything set within it. We walked through prong configuration, band width, the profile of the matching wedding band, and how the two rings would sit together on the finger until every detail was exactly right.

The Finished Set

The completed Lab Grown Emerald 3-Stone Ring and matching wedding band is a set that could only have come from a client who arrived with a clear vision and the stones to match it. The elongated cushion lab grown emerald commands the center with a depth of color that is immediately captivating, the two trapezoid lab grown diamonds flanking it with geometric precision and brilliant contrast. In 14 karat yellow gold, the entire set glows with warmth.

The matching wedding band sits flush against the engagement ring exactly as it was designed to — the two pieces completing each other in a way that makes it clear they were conceived together from the very start.

It is inspired by something we made before. It is entirely something new.
