Art With an Edge
Some pendant projects arrive with a soft subject — a name, a symbol, an image rooted in warmth and sentiment. Others arrive with something bolder. When this client came into AJ’s Jewelry, the design they brought was immediately striking: a broken diamond — a geometric, fragmented form with the kind of sharp, angular character that reads as both visually arresting and surprisingly personal. The concept was clear, the artwork was clean, and the direction was already fully formed. All that remained was the process of making it real in sterling silver — and adding the one finishing detail that would give the design the visual impact it was always going to need.
The Design: A Broken Diamond With Immediate Character
The broken diamond as a visual motif carries a quality that few geometric subjects can claim: it is simultaneously precise and dramatic, structured and fractured, composed of clean lines that nonetheless create the impression of something coming apart at its edges. As a pendant subject, it occupies a space that is distinctly different from the organic, flowing subjects that most custom jewelry explores — its angular, faceted geometry making it immediately distinctive and immediately wearable as a piece that says something specific about the person wearing it.
For the client who brought this design in, the broken diamond was personal in the way that original artwork always is — a visual idea that belonged to them, expressed in their own hand, and meaningful in the way that only a design you created yourself can be. Wearing it in sterling silver was the natural next step: taking what existed as artwork and making it into something permanent, wearable, and present every day.
A Clean Design Ready to Become a Pendant
What distinguished this project from the start was the quality and clarity of the artwork the client provided. The broken diamond design was clean — its geometric lines sharp, its fragmented facets clearly defined, and its overall composition organized in a way that made the conversion to vector art both straightforward and faithful to the original.
Vector art is the format our laser engraving and cutting machine requires to work with the precision a pendant of this geometric character demands. A design built on angular lines and sharp intersections — the defining qualities of a broken diamond form — needs to be reproduced with the kind of accuracy that pixel-based imagery cannot always guarantee. Vector art is built from mathematically precise lines and curves that the laser follows without approximation, meaning the sharp angles and clean edges of the broken diamond design were reproduced exactly in the production file, with none of the softening or interpretation that converting from a less precise source would introduce.
The client’s artwork converted to vector cleanly and completely — the geometric facets of the broken diamond, the sharp intersecting lines, and the overall fragmented composition all carrying through to the production file without loss of definition or character. The vector file was a faithful representation of what the client had drawn, and what the client had drawn was exactly what was going to be engraved and cut in silver.
Laser Engraved and Laser Cut
With the vector file production-ready, the pendant moved to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and the design began to take physical form in sterling silver.
The laser first engraved the design into the silver sheet — the interior linework of the broken diamond, the intersecting facet lines, and all of the geometric detail that gives the form its fractured, angular character. The engraved lines create recessed channels across the face of the piece that follow the broken diamond’s geometry with the sharpness and consistency the subject demands — channels that would later receive the black enamel fill that gives the finished pendant its defining visual impact.
Once the engraving was complete, the laser cut the pendant out of the silver sheet — following the outer outline of the vector file exactly and producing the silhouette of the broken diamond with the clean, precise edges the design’s geometric character requires.
Finished by Hand First
From the laser, the pendant went directly to our bench jeweler for the hand finishing work that had to happen before the enamel could be applied. This sequence matters — the polishing and edge refinement that brings sterling silver to its best finish needs to be completed on the bare metal, before the enamel fill is in place, so that the surfaces surrounding the engraved channels can be brought to their fullest brightness without any risk of disturbing or contaminating the enamel that would come after.
Edges were smoothed and refined, and every surface of the pendant was polished to the bright, reflective finish that sterling silver achieves at its best. The geometric lines of the engraved broken diamond design were inspected across the face of the piece — the channels clean and well-defined, the sharp intersections of the facet lines precise and ready to receive the enamel fill. The jump ring was attached at this stage as well, the piece inspected from every angle for the quality of its finish and the precision of its engraved detail before it moved to the final step.
Only once the pendant was fully polished and finished to the standard of a completed piece of fine jewelry did the enamel work begin.
Finished With Black Enamel
The black enamel fill was the detail the client had specified from the beginning — and it was a specification that understood exactly what the design needed to achieve its full visual impact.
Sterling silver is a bright, reflective metal. An engraved line on a polished silver surface catches light and reads clearly, but it competes with the reflective surface around it in a way that can soften the graphic impact of a geometric design at distance. Black enamel eliminates that competition entirely.
Applied carefully into the engraved channels of the broken diamond design, the black enamel fills the recessed linework with a flat, opaque depth that creates an absolute contrast against the polished silver surface surrounding it. The result is not simply an engraved line made darker — it is a graphic element rendered with the clarity of something printed, sitting in the surface of the silver with a boldness and definition that makes the broken diamond’s geometry read with maximum impact from every distance and in every light.
The angular lines of the fractured facets, the sharp intersections, the overall geometry of the design — all of it present with a crispness and a graphic authority that the polished engraving alone would not have achieved to the same degree. The black enamel is what takes the pendant from beautifully made to immediately striking.
Once the enamel was applied and cured, any excess was carefully cleaned from the polished silver surface — ensuring that the black fill sat cleanly and precisely within the engraved channels without any residue on the surrounding metal, the contrast between the flat black enamel and the bright silver surface as sharp and as clean as the design itself.
The Finished Pendant
The completed Sterling Silver Broken Diamond Pendant is the client’s artwork made permanent in silver and enamel — and the sequence of craftsmanship that produced it is present in every detail of the finished piece. The polished sterling silver surface glows with the brightness that the hand finishing delivered. Against it, the black enamel fill in the engraved channels reads with absolute graphic clarity — the broken diamond’s fragmented geometry bold, precise, and immediately striking from across the room and up close alike.
The angular lines are sharp. The enamel is clean. The contrast is exactly what the design always needed to be.
It is a pendant built on clean lines and deliberate contrast — precise where it needs to be, bold where it needs to be, and entirely the client’s own from the first line of the original artwork to the finished piece on the chain. It belongs to no catalog. It matches no template. It exists because one person had a design worth wearing and brought it to the right place to make that happen.
