When this client came into AJ's Jewelry, the request carried all of that meaning. A personalized pendant in sterling silver featuring their child's jersey number and name — a piece that would take what happens on the field and make it something that could be worn every single day, long after the uniform comes off.

The design brief was clear from the start: the pendant needed to incorporate both the jersey number and the child's name together in a single, cohesive piece. Not two separate elements sitting awkwardly side by side, but a unified composition where the number and the name worked together visually — the number as the bold, dominant element, the name as the personal detail that made it unmistakably about one specific athlete rather than any kid who has ever worn that digit.

Getting that balance right required working through the design carefully before anything was cut or engraved — because on a pendant of this scale, proportion and layout are everything.

Unlike projects that begin with a logo or a reference image, this pendant started with a conversation. The client described exactly what they envisioned — the jersey number, the name, the general layout and feel of the piece — and our team translated that description into a designed layout that could be reviewed, refined, and approved before production began.

This design stage is where the pendant took its essential form. The size relationship between the number and the name, the way the text would be arranged within the pendant's overall shape, the proportions of the piece as a whole — all of it was worked out in the design phase, with the client's description as the guide and the client's approval as the destination. Nothing moved to production until the design was exactly right.

With the vector file ready, the pendant moved to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and the design began to take physical form in sterling silver.

The laser first engraved the detail of the design into the silver sheet — the jersey number rendered with the bold, clear weight it commands as the focal point of the piece, and the child's name engraved with the precision that ensures it reads cleanly and completely at the scale of the pendant. Laser engraving produces a consistency and sharpness of line that makes personalized text read with the clarity it needs to be immediately legible — every letter of the name distinct, every element of the number sharp and well-defined.

Once the engraving was complete, the laser cut the pendant out of the silver sheet — following the vector outline exactly and producing clean, precise edges that give the piece its final shape. The combination of engraved detail and laser-cut silhouette produces a pendant that is defined and finished in its essential form straight off the machine.

From the laser, the pendant went to our bench jeweler for the finishing work that completes the piece. Edges were smoothed and refined, surfaces were polished, and the sterling silver was brought to the bright, clean finish the metal is known for — a finish that makes the engraved number and name read with sharp contrast against the polished background, clear and present from across a room.

The jump ring was attached, the piece was inspected, and a jersey number and a name became a pendant in silver — personal, precise, and ready to be worn.
