From Design to Vector: Preparing for Production
With the design established, the pendant was converted into a precise vector file — the format our laser engraving and cutting machine requires to work with the accuracy and consistency this kind of detailed, meaningful piece demands.
Vector art is built from mathematically defined lines and curves that remain perfectly precise at every scale and can be followed by the laser with absolute fidelity. Our team built the complete shield design into a clean, production-ready vector file — the outline of the shield, the interior structural detail, and the badge number all incorporated into the artwork exactly as they would appear in the finished pendant.
The badge number was placed with particular care — positioned within the shield's composition so that it read with clarity and prominence, honoring the significance of that specific number to the firefighter who would wear it.
Laser Engraved and Laser Cut
With the vector file finalized, the design moved to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and the FDNY shield pendant began to take physical form in sterling silver.
The laser first engraved the detail of the shield into the silver sheet — the interior linework and structural elements that give the emblem its recognizable character, and at the center of it all, the badge number engraved with the sharpness and precision that ensures it reads clearly and prominently within the design. Once the engraving was complete, the laser cut the pendant out of the silver sheet — following the outline of the vector file exactly and producing the silhouette of the fire shield with clean, precise edges that hold the iconic form true to the original. The shape of the FDNY shield, cut cleanly in sterling silver, is immediately recognizable to anyone who has ever looked up at the side of a fire truck or watched a firefighter walk through a door.
Finished by Hand
From the laser, the pendant went to our bench jeweler for the finishing work that completes the piece and brings the sterling silver to the standard a gift of this significance deserves. Edges were smoothed and refined, surfaces were polished, and the silver was brought to the bright, clean finish the metal is known for — a tone that suits the gravity and pride of the subject beautifully.
