When a Great Client Comes Back With Another Stone
Some of the most rewarding projects at AJ’s Jewelry are the ones that begin with a returning client — someone who trusted us with a stone once, saw what we did with it, and came back because they had another stone that deserved the same treatment. When this client reached out to us again, the history between us already established a shared language. We had built a custom 14 karat yellow gold labradorite solitaire ring together — a classic profile built around a personal labradorite stone, designed to sit naturally in an existing collection. The result had spoken for itself.
This time, the client had another labradorite. A pear-shaped stone with its own distinct character and its own particular expression of the optical phenomenon that makes labradorite unlike anything else in the gemstone world. And it needed a ring built specifically around it — not a standard mounting pulled from a catalog, but a custom solitaire setting designed and produced from scratch to fit this exact stone and no other.
The Stone: Another Labradorite, Entirely Its Own
Labradorite is a gemstone that defies easy description until it is seen in person — and even then, the words available to describe it feel inadequate for what the eye actually experiences. The phenomenon at the heart of labradorite’s appeal is called labradorescence: an optical effect produced by light interference within the stone’s internal layered structure, generating flashes of iridescent color that appear to move and shift from within the stone itself rather than from its surface. Blue, green, gold, violet — the colors that surface and transform as the stone is moved through light are not a surface coating or a treatment. They are the stone’s own internal architecture expressing itself in color.
What makes labradorite particularly compelling as a subject for custom jewelry is that no two stones share the same display. The specific colors, the intensity, the pattern and distribution of the labradorescence — all of it is entirely individual to each stone. The pear-shaped labradorite the client brought in carried its own specific character: a stone with its own color play, its own internal optical world, and a pear silhouette whose organic, tapered form made it immediately distinctive from the oval stone we had set in the first ring.
A stone like this does not belong in a standard commercial mounting. It belongs in a setting designed around it — one that honors its specific dimensions, its exact proportions, and the shape that makes it what it is.
The Challenge: A Custom Mounting Built for This Stone
The pear shape and the sensitive nature of labradorite as a material introduced a set of considerations that shaped every decision in this project from the very beginning.
Labradorite is a relatively soft and delicate stone compared to diamonds and many other gemstones commonly used in jewelry. It is a stone that rewards careful handling and thoughtful setting — and in the case of this particular pear-shaped stone, the combination of its off-cut shape and its delicate composition made it clear that a traditional prong setting would not be the right approach. The pressure that prongs exert on a stone during setting — and the stress they can place on a delicate stone over time through daily wear — presented too great a risk for a stone of this nature.
Instead, the mounting was designed as a custom bezel-style setting built to cradle the exact outline of the pear-shaped labradorite, and the stone was secured using a professional jewelry adhesive — a technique used specifically for sensitive and delicate stones where the risk of mechanical setting pressure outweighs the advantages of a traditional prong or bezel clamp approach. When handled with the care and precision this method demands, the result is a stone held securely within a setting designed precisely for its shape, presented beautifully, and protected from the stresses that a less considered approach would introduce.
The mounting itself had to be produced to the exact dimensions of this specific stone — not a general approximation of a pear shape, but a setting built from the precise measurements of the labradorite in hand, so that the stone would sit within it with the snug, supported fit that the adhesive setting method requires to perform correctly and durably.
Seeing the Rendering Before Production
With the stone’s exact dimensions measured and the custom mounting design developed, a full digital rendering of the finished ring was produced for the client’s review before any production began.
This step was particularly important for a project of this nature. A custom mounting built to the specific dimensions of an off-cut pear-shaped labradorite is not something either party can fully evaluate from a verbal description or a sketch. Seeing the rendering allowed the client to assess exactly how the mounting would hold and frame the pear-shaped stone — the way the setting would follow the outline of the pear from its tapered point to its rounded shoulder, the profile of the 14 karat yellow gold band below, and the overall proportions of the finished ring as a complete composition.
The rendering also allowed the client to evaluate how this second labradorite ring would relate to the first — seeing the pear-shaped stone in its custom yellow gold mounting and understanding how the finished piece would wear alongside the solitaire already in the collection. The proportions of the new ring were reviewed against that context, any refinements were discussed and resolved, and the design was approved before a single gram of gold was committed to production.
The rendering was confirmed. Production began.
Cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold, Finished With Care
With the digital model approved, the custom mounting was cast in 14 Karat Yellow Gold — the same metal as the first labradorite ring, consistent with the collection the client had been building and with the warmth that yellow gold brings to labradorite’s particular optical character.
Yellow gold and labradorite have a natural affinity that goes beyond simple aesthetic preference. The warm, deep tone of the yellow gold provides a backdrop that complements labradorite’s blue and gold labradorescent flashes — the warmth of the metal resonating with the golden tones in the stone’s color play while providing enough contrast to allow the cooler blues and greens to appear vivid and distinct. In a custom mounting designed specifically for this stone, the yellow gold does not simply hold the labradorite. It frames it in a way that allows the stone’s full optical character to express itself.
Once cast to the exact specifications of the custom design and polished to the warm, high-polish finish the metal is known for, the mounting went to our bench jeweler for the careful placement of the pear-shaped labradorite — the most delicate and most consequential step of the entire project.
Setting a sensitive stone of this nature requires patience, precision, and a genuine understanding of the material being worked with. The pear-shaped labradorite was positioned within its custom mounting with care — oriented to present its most vivid labradorescent display through the face of the stone as it would be seen on the finger, and seated within the mounting with the exact fit that the custom dimensions had been designed to achieve. The stone was then secured with professional jewelry adhesive, applied with the precision that ensures a durable, clean hold without any residue or interference with the stone’s appearance.
The adhesive approach was not a compromise — it was the right method for this specific stone, chosen specifically because it protects the labradorite from the stresses that mechanical setting techniques would introduce, and because it allows the stone to be presented fully and beautifully within the custom mounting built to hold it.
Final Polish and Inspection
With the labradorite seated and secured, the ring underwent a final inspection — every surface of the mounting reviewed for the quality of finish a piece of this care demands, the stone verified for correct orientation and secure placement within its custom setting, and the labradorescence confirmed under multiple lighting conditions to ensure the stone’s color play was presenting at its fullest and most vivid in the finished ring.
The Finished Ring
The completed Custom 14 Karat Yellow Gold Pear Shaped Labradorite Ring is the second chapter of a custom jewelry story that began with a different stone and the same commitment to building a setting worthy of what was brought in. The pear-shaped labradorite sits within its custom yellow gold mounting exactly as the rendering showed it would — its tapered form framed cleanly by the setting built to its exact dimensions, its labradorescent color play presenting through the open face of the mounting with the full vividness the stone is capable of.
It joins the first labradorite ring in a collection that now holds two stones, two shapes, and two entirely distinct expressions of the same extraordinary optical phenomenon — each one built in the same warm yellow gold, each one designed specifically for the stone at its center, and each one a piece of jewelry that could only have been made for this client, around these specific stones, by people who understood exactly what they were working with and how to work with it correctly.
Have a Sensitive or Off-Cut Stone Looking for the Right Setting?
Not every stone can be set in a standard mounting using standard techniques — and that is not a limitation. It is an invitation to build something more specific and more considered. Whether it is a labradorite, an opal, a delicate specimen stone, or any gemstone whose nature requires a thoughtful approach, come into AJ’s Jewelry and let’s figure out the right way to set it.
