From Lapel Pin to Gold Pendant: The 14 Karat Gold Floral Name Pendant

A Design Already Loved, Now Made Personal

Some of the most meaningful custom jewelry commissions begin not with a new idea but with something that already exists — a design that has already been made, already been worn, and already proven itself worth carrying further. When this client came into AJ’s Jewelry, that was exactly the situation. The floral name design he brought in was not a sketch or a concept. It was a finished piece of artwork that he had already produced as a lapel pin — a design that had been refined, reproduced, and worn before it ever became a piece of jewelry.

Now he wanted to take that same design — the one he had already committed to in pin form — and give it to his significant other as a pendant in 14 karat gold. Not something inspired by the lapel pin, not a variation on the theme, but the design itself: the specific floral name artwork, translated faithfully from the pin he wore into a piece of fine jewelry made for the person he loved. The connection between the two pieces was the entire point. The pendant would carry the same design as the lapel pin — making the two objects a pair in the most personal and intentional sense possible.

It would not be the last pendant he had us make. Pleased with the result, he would later return with a second design — a 14 karat gold round name pendant built from a different piece of artwork, giving the person who wore the first pendant a second piece to wear alongside it. But this is where that story began.

The Artwork: Proven, Precise, and Ready

One of the qualities that set this project apart from many custom pendant commissions was the nature of the artwork the client brought in. A design that has already been produced as a lapel pin has gone through its own production process — it has already been refined to the point where it reproduces cleanly and consistently, its lines defined and its composition resolved in a way that makes it immediately workable for another production method.

The client provided the artwork for the floral name design along with specific size requirements for the finished pendant — the exact dimensions he wanted the piece to be, informed by a clear sense of how it should wear and how it should relate to the lapel pin version he already had. Those size specifications were not afterthoughts. They were part of the brief from the beginning, and they shaped every subsequent step of the production process.

Having specific size requirements in hand from the start is a significant advantage in a project like this. Scale affects everything in a laser-produced pendant — the weight of the linework relative to the overall size of the piece, the legibility of the name at the specified dimensions, the proportion of the floral elements to the lettering within the composition. Working to defined dimensions from the outset meant that every decision about the vector file could be made with the finished size already known, rather than adapting the production file after the fact.

From Artwork to Vector: Preparing the Design

With the client’s artwork and size specifications in hand, the first production step was converting the floral name design into a precise vector file — the format our laser engraving and cutting machine requires to work with the accuracy the design and the specified dimensions demanded.

Vector art is built from mathematically defined lines and curves that remain perfectly precise at any scale and can be followed by the laser with absolute fidelity. For a design like this one — where the floral elements and the name lettering needed to be reproduced exactly at the client’s specified size, with the same character and proportion as the original lapel pin artwork — vector precision was essential. Any approximation in the production file would have been visible in the finished piece, and visible in a way that would have undermined the direct connection between the pendant and the pin that made the commission meaningful.

The client’s artwork was converted to vector with care — every element of the floral design, the lettering of the name, and the overall composition of the piece rebuilt as precise vector art at the exact dimensions the client had specified. The result was a production file that was as faithful to the original artwork as the laser could be asked to follow.

Laser Engraved and Laser Cut in 14 Karat Gold

With the vector file finalized at the client’s specified dimensions, the design moved to our laser engraving and cutting machine — and the floral name pendant began its transformation from digital artwork into 14 karat gold.

The laser first engraved the detail of the design into the gold sheet — the floral elements, the name lettering, and all of the fine interior detail that gives the design its character and makes it immediately recognizable as the same artwork the client had already produced as a lapel pin. Working from the vector file with the precision the laser delivers, the engraved detail was reproduced across the surface of the gold at the exact scale the client had specified — the name legible, the floral elements present and well-defined, the overall composition faithful to the original artwork at every point.

Once the engraving was complete, the laser cut the pendant out of the gold sheet — following the outline of the vector file exactly and producing the silhouette of the floral name design with clean, precise edges at the exact dimensions the client had requested. The finished cut piece came off the machine as the pendant the client had envisioned — the right size, the right design, the right detail.

Finished by Hand

From the laser, the pendant went to our bench jeweler for the finishing work that brings the piece from a precisely produced cut of gold to a finished piece of fine jewelry. Edges were smoothed and refined, surfaces were polished, and the 14 karat gold was brought to the warm, rich finish that gives the metal its depth and character.

Against the polished gold surface, the engraved detail of the floral name design deepens in contrast — the linework of the flowers and the lettering of the name sharper and more present against the reflective gold background, the design reading with the clarity and warmth that 14 karat gold brings to everything it holds. The jump ring was attached, the pendant was inspected against the client’s specified dimensions and the original artwork, and the piece was confirmed as complete.

Why 14 Karat Gold

For a pendant that carries a design already associated with the client through its existence as a lapel pin, 14 Karat Gold was the choice that elevated the commission to the level of fine jewelry while preserving the warmth and richness that suits a floral and name design beautifully.

Yellow gold and floral motifs have a natural affinity rooted in the warmth of both — the organic curves of flowers finding a complementary backdrop in the deep, warm tone of the gold, the name lettering glowing with a richness that silver or white metal does not always achieve in the same way. The floral name design, in 14 karat gold, has a warmth and presence that makes it feel like fine jewelry in the fullest sense — not a reproduction of the lapel pin in a different material, but a version of the design that belongs in gold as completely as the original belonged on a lapel.

At 14 karats, the gold delivers the durability a pendant worn daily demands — holding the engraved detail of the floral name design through years of everyday wear without compromise.

The Finished Pendant — And the Beginning of a Set

The completed 14 Karat Gold Floral Name Pendant is a piece that exists at the intersection of personal design and personal relationship. The floral name artwork — already meaningful through its existence as a lapel pin the client wears — now exists in gold at the exact dimensions he specified, engraved with the precision that preserves every element of the original design, finished with the warmth and richness that 14 karat gold brings to a design of this character.

The lapel pin and the pendant now share the same design — the same floral name artwork, the same composition, the same identity — carried by two people in two different forms. One on the lapel. One on the chain. The same design, made personal in both directions.

And the story didn’t end there. The client returned with a second piece of artwork and the same brief — giving the person who wears this pendant a round name pendant in 14 karat gold to wear alongside it. Two pendants, two designs, one client who understood exactly what made both of them worth making.
